What will happen with sports now that everything is canceled or delayed?
Possibly the biggest news of the year is the cancellation or delay of all major sports. So where does this leave sports fans? I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that life is sad right now. Before the announcements, most people thought that sports would still be played, just not with a live audience. Now, not only are people being quarantined, but we are now being quarantined without the option of watching sports to pass the time by.
For the NBA, the season is pretty much over for the time being. The NBA has announced that the season is suspended until further notice (pretty much because of the Jazz). This may be good news for the Jazz who have resumed play after the All Start Break with a less than stellar record. Some might argue that the Jazz were just picking up speed. This may be true, but now the Jazz have a great opportunity to get better mentally, physically, and emotionally, whether they wanted to or not… This may be great news for the Jazz in the long run.
For the New York Yankees, the delay of the season also may not be a bad thing. If the season started when they were supposed to, we would be without Judge, Stanton, and Paxton. Now, because of the delay, we could be starting the season with all the players ready to perform. Another cool side affect is that we now might have the opportunity to see a world series played in the dead of winter. This would truly make this season very memorable.
For the BYU cougars, it is hard to see a positive. BYU Basketball was having the best season they have had in years. Now that the season has been canceled, it seems like all the hard work was for nothing. For other sports such as baseball, they are giving the players an extra year of eligibility. But for basketball? They are sending off the seniors with a pit in their stomach, and an extra measure of feeling incomplete. The NCAA can do better for these players.
As a fan it can be difficult to see a positive out of this otherwise miserable news. For most fans, they will now be stuck at home watching the Office for the hundredth time, and just dreaming of when sports will be back on. But maybe this isn’t such a bad thing for us hardcore fans? There is a saying that says that “absence, makes the heart grow fonder”, or something like that. One potential affect of this is that fans will be rejuvenated, and more hardcore than ever before? Another effect is that we now have the opportunity spend more time with family and friends. Get out and play the sports you can. Take this opportunity and make the best of it. This truly isn’t all bad. I’m sure that if you take the time, you will be able to see many more positives.
Don’t despair and remember, Sports will be back sooner than we think.
